Physical activity and exercise are an essential part of life, no matter what age you are, and they most definitely shouldn’t stop as you get older. Participating in regular exercise or maintaining an active lifestyle is important for remaining healthy and keeping your energy level high as you get older, whether taking part in a sport or hobby, like bowls, or embarking on daily walks to get your legs and body moving.

Many people, especially the elderly, spend many hours each day sitting or lying down, which can be a cause of heart disease, contribute to putting on weight, and even early death compared with the general population.

What Are The Benefits of Physical Activity for The Elderly?

As we get older, it becomes even more important to remain active in order to become healthier, with the World Health Organisation publishing a guide on the importance of physical activity for the elderly, stating that exercise is an efficient and cost-effective way of preventing the decline of older people’s functional capacity.

Physical activity is a necessity, no matter who you are, especially for elderly adults with limited mobility, which is why we have found some great exercises for those with limited mobility that work for different muscle groups in the body even if they cannot stand up:

  • Seated Row
  • Seated Tummy Twist
  • Overhead Arm Raises
  • Hand Squeezes
  • Inner Thigh Squeeze
  • Knee Lifts
  • Knee Extensions
There are multiple benefits of remaining active during your older years, such as maintaining independence in your daily life, strengthening bones and muscles, improving cognitive function by keeping the brain active, and maintaining good mental health through socialising with others, especially in group activities.

How Much Physical Activity Do Elderly People Need?
As mentioned, regular physical activity can help prevent or delay numerous health problems and the decline of functional capacity, helping muscles grow stronger and ensuring you can carry on doing your daily activities without needing constant assistance.

According to the NHS website, adults aged 65 and over should aim to be physically active every day, completing activities to improve strength, balance, and flexibility at least two days a week, recommending that this should include 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week.
