Getting older is a natural part of life for us all, but it can be distressing if you or a loved one begins to develop memory problems. Alzheimer’s or any other type of dementia can be frustrating, confusing and difficult for all involved, whether it’s you yourself suffering or a friend or relative. Anyone with dementia is likely to need some level of extra care, but there are some easily accessible activities out there that can stimulate the brain and help sufferers stay engaged. Although we are not a specialist provider of care for those with dementia, we often get asked for advice on how friends and family can help those starting to show the signs of memory loss. If you have a relative or loved one living with dementia, read on for just a few things you can do to help ease the stress of living with dementia.

Reminisce with photos and videos

Many people with dementia find that their long term memory is a lot stronger than the short term, and it can be comforting for both you and your loved ones to reminisce together. Look at old family photo albums or home videos, ask about a particular favourite memory or make a scrapbook together.

Visit a sensory garden

It’s important to spend time outdoors in the fresh air, and sensory gardens are specifically designed to appeal to many different senses which can provide a lot of stimulation for those with dementia. They often include scented plants, water features, sculptures and textured touch pads, and can provide a lot of enjoyment, especially if the person with dementia used to garden as a hobby.

Animal therapy

Stroking an animal or spending time with a pet is proven to help reduce depression and anxiety, and spending time with an animal can also lower blood pressure and the stress hormone, cortisol. Some care homes organise visits from local animal shelters, or if your friend or relative lives at home you could arrange for someone with a well behaved pet to visit every once in a while. Many older people might not have the energy to look after or walk a pet anymore, but miss the many positives a pet can bring.

Cooking or baking

Cooking or baking simple recipes together is important to maintain a sense of independence, and you get something tasty at the end of it! Depending on the stage they’re at, some dementia patients may find it soothing to watch a carer or relative cook for them, or someone can be on hand to do things that may be difficult like chopping vegetables or opening cans.

Living with dementia can be difficult for both the person with the condition and their loved ones. It is important for all friends and family involved in caring for someone with dementia to seek professional advice on the best care. At Avon Park, we are not able to provide care for those with dementia, but have found that many of these activities are enjoyed by our residents. See some of our Latest News posts and Activities page to find out about how we help keep our residents mentally and physically active.
