Lapses in memory are an issue everyone experiences from time to time. Whether it’s forgetting what you were about to say, or being unable to remember someone’s name, we’re all affected at times.
However, as we age this tends to happen more often. Yet, when the frequency of these lapses increases, it can be understandably frustrating. There’s no need for concern though, we can find ways to combat this.
Keep on Thinking!
It sounds obvious, right? Well, keeping an active brain, and continuing to challenge yourself is absolutely vital to better mental function in older age. Those with a higher education will generally correlate to all round better mental function into older age.
Therefore, continuing to challenge your brain, even as you grow older is of paramount importance. Like anything, it really helps to do something you enjoy. This can be by doing puzzles, crosswords or word searches, for example. Or, if that’s not of interest, anything from reading a book to getting creative with art sessions, like the ones we offer within the care home.
Stay Engaged Socially
Keeping strong social ties is another hugely important factor in staying mentally healthy throughout your life. From the youngest child to the oldest adult, everyone needs human interaction. For those still living at home, this can be a difficult obstacle to overcome.
However, within a care home environment, there’s always someone to speak to, even just someone to be around. We also offer lots of engaging activities, such as bingo and cookery lessons, where you can forge new friendships, and have some fun too!
As we age it can prove more difficult to maintain a physically active lifestyle. However, a mentally active lifestyle, and a physically active lifestyle tend to go hand in hand. Although some us may not be able to do as much as we were once able to, that’s no reason to stop.
If you’re someone who’s perhaps neglected much physical activity then it’s important to build yourself up. Even if you begin with a 5 minute brisk walk a day, then you’re moving in the right direction.
Eventually, when and if you’re able to you should look to build up to 30 minutes of exercise a day, around 5 times a week. Fear not though, this doesn’t need to be done all in one go, exercising in 10 minute increments throughout your day will have the same results.
Remember, you know your limitations better than anyone. So, it’s important not to worry about what everyone around you can do, as long as you’re trying. Most importantly of all, it’s vital that whatever you do, that you take the time to give yourself a pat on the back for any progress you make!
