How to Keep Elderly People Safe from Coronavirus

COVID-19 Safe Care Home Southampton

During this very daunting time, across the world, everyone is concerned about the health of themselves and their families especially elderly relatives who are most at risk and their well-being is the most important thing.

The NHS and Government have advised that people over 70 are more likely to become severely ill if they catch coronavirus. This means that people in this category are asked to be more careful and stay at home for about 12 weeks.

It’s recommended to go out just if there’s no other option and there’s no one else to help and buy vital supplies such as food or medication.

There are some really important steps that older people and their families should take to avoid any possibility for the virus to reach vulnerable people:

1.Avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus like a high temperature and/or a new and continuous cough.

2.If you must visit your elderly family member, you should keep a distance of at least 2 meters; no kissing and hugging.

3.Wash your hands well and often for at least 20 seconds or for two rounds of the song ‘Happy Birthday’.

4.Try to stay self-isolated and ask friends, family or neighbours to help organise deliveries for food and other supplies.

Steps taken at Avon Park

Here at Avon Park we recently had to take a very difficult but necessary decision for the sake of our residents’ health.

Unfortunately, we will not allow any visitors until further notice. However, there will be an exception to see your loved ones if they become unwell and receive End of Life Care.

But we have some good news! As we live in the 21st century and thankfully we have technology, residents’ families can still contact their loved ones here at our care home via Skype. You will be able to see them and speak with them to be sure that they are well looked after. If you would prefer a telephone conversation rather than Skype – we can make this work too!

We want to thank everyone for all the support and understanding and hopefully we will be back to normal life soon!
